How Spinal Disc Decompression Works
The spinal disc - composed of soft cartilaginous material - separates the spinal vertebrae and acts as a shock absorber. The nutritional blood supply to spinal discs is sparse, so if a disc is injured it may continue to degenerate and not heal properly. Disc decompression exerts negative pressure on a predetermined, specific area of the spine allowing for an increase in the disc space between the vertebrae. As the disc space is increased the disc begins to absorb nutrition and rehydrate which expedites the healing process. Over time decompression therapy allows the herniated and bulging discs to return to their normal, healthy state and the patient is able to live pain-free once again.
